Clockwork Angel

When sixteen-year-old orphan Tessa Gray's older brother suddenly vanishes, her search for him leads her into Victorian-era London's dangerous supernatural underworld, and when she discovers that she herself is a Downworlder, she must learn to trust the demon-killing Shadowhunters if she ever wants to learn to control her powers and find her brother.

Clockwork Angel is the first book in The Infernal Devices trilogy, itself a prequel to the popular Mortal Instruments Series.  Much like in the mortal instruments series our main protagonist is a young woman, in this case Tessa Gray, and also an outsider to the world of the Shadowhunters.

Clockwork Angel is marked by several of Cassandra Clare’s trademarks: from her characters often quirky and sometimes morbid senses of humor, to their sometimes surprising empathy and occasional callousness these are characters that, while certainly identifiable as belonging to their author, feel none the less genuine and well realized.  The plot itself is well paced and though the story itself is more or less self-contained this is certainly the beginning of the trilogy and readers will not find answers to every question (such as WHY exactly the Magister wants Tessa) in this volume.  It is worth noting that all Three books in the trilogy are now out.
Clockwork Angel is on the 2013 Sequoyah Award High School Masterlist.
