The Sea of Monsters
When Camp Half-Blood, the only safe haven for demigods, comes close to being overrun by mythological monsters, Percy must find his best friend Grover, who is prisoner on an island in the Bermuda Triangle, and then set out to save the Camp…
The Sea of Monsters is the second book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and the direct sequel to The Lightning Thief. The book starts at the very end of school, the following year just before summer break is set to begin. Percy is (of course) once again at a new school, and has made a friend of Tyson, a homeless boy and classmate. But things change when Percy is attacked by monsters in gym class. When Annabeth shows up to help escort him back to camp Half-blood, via the oh-so-charming “Chariot of Damnation”, they find the camp beset by monsters, and the guardian tree of the camp poisoned.
This book sees the introduction of a half-brother for Percy, as well as quite a bit more detail on monsters, especially those that are the children of gods. We also find out more about the Satyr’s quest for Pan, and idea of “divine geography” (i.e. Mount Olympus being on top of the Empire State building), ala the Sea of the books title. It is worth noting that the long awaited film adaptation of this book is due out on August 8th.
