Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi

Ship Breaker

The book had been on my "to read" list for a while, simply because of its status as an award winner, and  when I finally got around to reading Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi, I thought I knew where the story was going.  I was wrong. This novel kept me guessing and held my interest through the last page.

In a world where most of the polar ice has melted and the gap between the rich and poor has grown to ever more astounding proportions, Nailer, who works on light crew of a company that breaks down old oil tankers for scrap. He and his fiercely loyal friend eek out an existence on the beaches of the Gulf, always looking for that "Lucky Strike."  When a hurricane blows in what promises to be the biggest strike ever, Nailer must decide whether to save a life or try to get rich.  And that's just the beginning.
