The Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service offers one-on-one
tutoring to adults and young adults (16+) who wish to improve their
reading and writing skills. Our tutors are people from the community. Our
tutors are people who find that a couple hours a week spent helping
someone learn to read -- helping someone better his or her life --
is time well spent. Our tutors are people like you.
Of course, it's not easy. Tutoring takes time,
patience, planning, patience, flexibility, caring, and patience. Did
we mention patience? In addition to possessing these qualities, our
tutors must fulfill these more specific requirements:
- Complete our free 12-hour tutor training. The training
is usually divided into 4, 3-hour classes. See the current
workshop schedule.
- Commit to tutor for a minimum of one year. Yes, you
may have to miss a week here and there for graduations, illness,
vacations, etc. However, working one-on-one takes trust and
understanding, which take time to develop. For someone learning
to read, having to switch tutors often can be discouraging, even
overwhelming. Adult learners need a partner who is willing
to stick with them.
- Devote 2 or more hours per week to tutoring. Meeting
times and places may be arranged for the convenience of you and your
student. Pairs usually meet at a library or other public facility.
- Be 18 years or older.
