Read Beyond Reality

This year’s sub-theme is "Read Beyond Reality @ your library®" which encourages teens to read something out of this world (other-worldly and you-name-it) just for the fun of it.  The most important thing is that teens are encouraged to read, no matter what the theme.

Programs
TCCL has traditionally offered a variety of programs during Teen Read Week – films, interactive murder mysteries, gaming and crafting, and a Goth prom.  Teen Read Week proper is October 18-24, but TCCL will celebrate during the entire month of October! Check our online event guide to see what is happening at a branch near you.

Our featured Teen Read Month program will be an Anime Mini-Con on Saturday, October 24th, 1-4pm at Hardesty Regional Library.  This event will give teens an opportunity to indulge and express their passion for manga and anime and take it to a higher level of interest and involvement.  Sequence of events:

1pm - Martial Arts Demo by Tulsa Martial Arts
2pm – Speech by Author and Illustrator Mark Crilley
3pm – Cosplay Contest

Teen Read Week is an initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Teen Read Week started in 1998, making 2009 our 12th celebration of Teen Read Week!

Why is it important to celebrate? For a lot of reasons! Teens have so many options for entertainment, so it’s important to remind them to spend time reading for pleasure: it’s free, fun, and can be done anywhere.  Research shows that teens who read for fun have better test scores and are more likely to succeed in the workforce.  There are so many possibilities that exist within the doors of the library and within the covers of books.
