Description |
President Theodore Roosevelt put forth a plan wherein the United States would buy from the French, the rights to build a canal across this narrow strip of land in Central America. Before that could happen, he helped the Panamanians free themselves from their overlords in Bogata, Columbia. Within a decade, one of the technological wonders of the world had been created and travel by water from the West Coast to the East Coast of the US was shortened by hundreds of miles and many extra travel hours. The Canal opened for business in August 1914 at a final cost to the US of $352,000,000. |
