Being widely hailed as The Time Traveler's Wife meets Friday Night Lights, Emily Henry's debut novel The Love That Split the World does not disappoint. Our protaganist, Natalie, is Native American by birth but adopted into a white family; and the balance of celebrating both her biological and adopted heritage is only a small part of the problems she's facing. The world flickers and shows her things that aren't there, including attractive, football-playing Beau Wilkes who disappears as quickly as he returns.
Harper Price is an overachieving high school student with the perfect boyfriend. Pretty, popular, and winning at life, Harper has all her ducks lined up and is ready to take on the world in her near-perfect life. But then she makes a dire mistake: she leaves her lip gloss at home on homecoming. This single mistake is the catalyst that leads her to witness a double murder, be kissed by a school janitor, and end up with super powers she never would have imagined having. As Harper is forced to take on the new responsibilities in her role as a supernatural guardian, she tries to balance being president of the Student Council, the other dozen clubs she's part of, her friends, boyfriend, and prepping for one of the biggest nights of her high school life: Cotillion.
Most likely you remember Lane's illustrations in the classic book, The True story of the 3 Little PIgs by A.Wolf. With over 14 books to his credit, both picture books and non-fiction he brings to teens a book about Augie Hobble. A paranormal event, an amusement park and more intertwine in this story. A great summer read, 4 stars for sure ****
